“Hey, guess what? Teach ain’t here! There’s a sub!” Have you ever heard a statement like that with a ton of excitement before?
It can be tough as a substitute coming into a school. Students don’t always behave the way they would if their teacher were actually at school. Most kids take the opportunity to act like anything but themselves with the thought of probably not getting in trouble afterward.Most substitutes cannot handle students being jittery and out of hand. Some subs have little experience, so the job becomes even more tense. Some subs lose control of the classroom because of how rowdy the students are.
Substitutes often receive no respect and no lesson plans. Lesson plans are what teachers have planned out for substitute teachers to do when they are absent. Lesson plans guide the substitutes throughout their day and help everything run more smoothly.
“A lot of times, I have support from the teacher. The teacher leaves an excellent lesson plan, showing the beginning of class to the end of class and school times.” says Mr. Summers, who was substituting for Ms. Frank at Unis Middle School
Sometimes teachers do not have a lesson planned out because an emergency took them away from the classroom and and they had to leave quickly. Lesson plans, which take time from teachers, even though they will not be in the classroom, might not get done because there absence was unplanned.
Substitutes have many different experiences with different classes. Sometimes, they have an outstanding class with no problems at all. At other times, they have a class that is way out of hand and the substitutes cannot control it. Other times, the sub receives a class that cannot understand the language they speak. Students misbehave and talk back.
Summer said his substituting experiences have included “Kid not listening or obeying. Students constantly disrupting and a rowdy group.”
Substitute Ahmed Badaoui said, “My worst experience was teaching a class where kids don’t understand English.”
The office staff in the school often helps the substitutes. In other schools, they say, subs receive no help from any of the teachers in the building or the office staff. This makes the job a lot harder.
Badaoui affirms, “Dearborn Public Schools provides a supportive office staff.”
Regular teachers know that thee substitutes might have a difficult time depending on the students and their behavior. In those case, the teacher tries to provide help for the sub and asks for a note about how well the day went so that there will be consequences for students who act up.
Despite challenges, substitutes say they often enjoy the time. Sometimes the substitutes’ days are great and they would love to come back and sub again.
“I enjoy subbing, i like working with the youth.” said substitute Badaoui
