The real world: Find the values in your life

“You are stupid, ugly, worthless.”

How many of you have heard those words? Degrading words ruin-self-esteem. If you hear those words enough, you start to believe them.

Albert Einstein once said, “everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

I asked two students and a counselor, Mrs. Wilkie, about self-esteem.

Kassem Beydoun

Student Kassem Beydoun said, “The meaning of life to me is to live the fullest and appreciate what you have. My life like as a kid was fun because I used to not worry about everything, but as I get older I am starting to realize the more you grow the more responsibility you have. In the future, I plan to become a pastry chef and open my own shop. I will achieve this goal by always moving on in life.”

Houssien Ajrouche

Houssien Ajrouche said, “The meaning of life to me is to have fun, live, and to get work done and prepare for the future. My life like in the past was great. I learned to always believe in myself and that life has its ups and downs. I plan to become an orthopedic surgeon and to live my lifelong dream. I will achieve my goal by making the best out of everything life throws at me.”

Nancy Wilkie

Counselor Nancy Wilkie said, “The meaning of life to me is to be humble, helpful and compassionate to all these I meet. In my past, I was very active, surrounded by family and friends. This relates to me, because I felt unsure myself in many situations and therefore needed support from other people and I was very shy in many situations. Bullying? I was made fun of for being tall. I help students by praising them, point out good things and talking positively.”

Unis Middle School
