A penny here, a penny there, then nowhere?

So there you have it. Most people wouldn’t actually care if the penny were discontinued. There are some pros for getting rid of the penny like saving the United States $300 million each year, but there are some cons. Some cons would be that the price of gas would round up to the nearest nickel. Also, people who use the penny the most would have to use the nickel now. This would also cause some inconveniences such as having to pay $ 1.10.

Last year alone, the U.S. made 6,015,200,00 pennies! Statistics say it costs 1.5 cents to make each penny. This means that for each penny the U.S. makes, we lose half a penny. When making a coin, you should never make the melt value of the coin worth more than the face value, or people could met them down for the value of the meatal. For example, the nickel takes seven cents to make while its face value is five cents, meaning the U.S. would lose two cents for every nickel! So, I asked some people what the U.S. should do and why.

One student at Unis Middle School said that we should just make the penny and nickel smaller like the dime. Though that would reduce costs of making the coins, it would also cause some problems. For example, if we had the old pennies and new smaller pennies together, people would be very confused. Also, vending machines everywhere would not accept the new coins. Other students said that they should leave the penny alone.

  1. Great story. I love the lead and I think pennies should still be used because removing it will create a lot of problems… :D Love the story.
